Voodoo may be closely associated with Caribbean countries such as Haiti, but the practice originated in West Africa and continues to play a big part in the everyday lives of the region’s inhabitants. So it’s perhaps not surprising that the Akodessewa Fetish Market in Togo’s capital, Lomé, is the largest Voodoo market in the world.

Stacked with the decaying heads of all manner of animals from goats and gazelles to monkeys, leopards and aligators, this scene provides fetishes and talismans to anyone from occultic priests and those in search of alternative potions to locals unable to afford traditional medicine.

“In the practice of Voodoo every single creature is potent and divine, whether alive or dead, and in the Akodessewa Fetish Market you may find them all… in various stages of decay and stacked up in macabre piles for blocks,” the oddities site reported.
