Voodoo may be closely associated with Caribbean countries such as Haiti, but the practice originated in West Africa and continues to play a big part in the everyday lives of the region’s inhabitants. So it’s perhaps not surprising that the Akodessewa Fetish Market in Togo’s capital, Lomé, is the largest Voodoo market in the world.

Reflections on the Future

Seeing the future as a project: The Long Now Foundation aims at developping a new way of thinking about our time and future. Opposing the current cultural mainstream that depicts our future’s environment as devastated and non-livable and the people as lonely and ruled by technology, the Foundation offers a more optimistic suggestions for seeing the time that will come. Basically it is the suggestion to start thinking about it at all – not in terms of short periods as modern democracies’ elections are structured but in really long runs.

Nothing New in “New Turkey’s” architecture

mimarsinan2Construction is the key factor in Turkey’s booming economy: currently the government has more than half a trillion dollars’ worth of planned, ongoing or recently completed building projects across the country. Oppulent projects that strive back to the glory and splendour of the Ottoman Empire. Erdoğan’s immense “White Palace” with more than 1000 rooms, İstanbul’s third airport that aims at becoming world’s largest, the digging of a whole “new Bosporus” making an island out of İstanbul and the construction of the biggest mosque in the history of the republic. All of these projects are highly contested regarding environmental and social impacts.
