‘This park is for Istanbul’s people’

said the Istanbul governor Hüseyin Avni Mutlu three hours before the park was closed again for the public.

Taksim Gezi Park, which has become the heart of the anti-government movement sweeping the nation, was briefly opened to public use today July 8 before access to the park was blocked again by police officers three hours later.

On the 15th day of Gezi Park resistance Turkish riot police attack through barricades firing tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannon at hundreds of protesters to clear Taksim Square early in the morning. Police remove banners on AKM building and Ataturk Sculpture while bulldozers and rubbish trucks clear up the barricades.

Istanbulites are rebelling in a never seen, peaceful unity of many groups out o different backgrounds. While media likes to focuse on riots and violence, the quality of this revolt is it’s Creativity. Istanbul is gassed massively, the youngsters from Beşiktaş lived nightmarish nights and had a big part in saving the Taksim Square and Gezi Park area from the police. The celebrations on Taksim Square wouldn’t be possible without the riots in Dolmabahçe and Beşiktaş.
