Mona Hatoum„I‘m not one of those artists. Art shouldn‘t preach. I don‘t want to be didactic.“ (1)

The show at Arter implies works of the past two decades by the lebanese artist.

Mona Hatoums has some certain topics which are recuring in her work.  The centre of all is the human body, existing between violence, powerstruggles, imprisonment and vulnerability.

Hatoum has a wide reportoire of changing materials and forms. Her works reflect a pure modesty first, but they are extremely complex with an inner beauty , that really moves.

Palastinian-British artist Mona Hatoum was born in 1952 in Beyruth, the capital of Lebanon. Since 1975 she is living in London, and since a couple of years she is pendling between London and Berlin.

In the 1980th Mona Hatoum was doing  performance art. Being a woman and a palastinian was the subject on the surface. Political circumstances and personal experiences were minimanistically woven to powerful statements in the art work.  That’s her technique until today.

Since the 1990th Hatoum does mainly sculpturous works and istallations in very different forms. In the current exhibition cubes out of different materials transport a spatial atmoshere. The spectator is intuitively projecting his or her own body into the cubes, a claustrophobic feeling occures….

No security nowhere to find…

She’s the fay with a magic spell in the  contemporary art world.
