Ramize Erer: Aklımda/Remembered

What does it mean to be a migrant? Coming from somewhere lost that is present only in the memories of the elder ones and in family albums.  Ramize Erer is a well known Turkish Cartoonist living in Paris and Istanbul. With the Solo show “Remembered” she is returning to painting, remembering her roots personally and technically.

The family moved from the Balkans to the Turkish Republic. Erer was born 1963 in Kırklareli and studied painting at the academy of Fine Arts in Istanbul. At University she started to draw Cartoons for the famous magazine Gırgır and grew into one of the most important female Voices of the Feminist movement already in the late 1980^th.

In 2007 Ramize Erer had to leave Istanbul for moving to Paris. In January 2015 she lost some of her closest friends in the attack on the French Satire magazine Charlie Hebdo. With her first Painting Solo Show in Istanbul Erer is having a meaningful come back to Turkey. In a time when so many people have to flee their homelands again she is remembering her own migration history.

The works are in Oil on Canvas. Stylistically Erer is fusing drawing and painting styles, figurative and alienation techniques. Some of the Portraits have a Kafkaesque touch while some are reminding photographs where details are added in a painting style on the Photo print.
